How To Choose Your Wedding Disc Jockey and caveats to avoid

Your wedding DJ determines whether your reception is a boom or bust...

There are thousands of wedding disc jockeys! But how do you find the wedding disc jockey that's perfect for you? Here on BridalTips.com you'll find all the caveats to avoid, questions to ask, what DJ equipment they should be using, and what you should have included in your contract. Many tips on this page are only our opinion, you must choose what you feel is right for your wedding.

Choosing your wedding DJ is the best part of your wedding preparations. You get to meet a lot of wedding industry people who are generally nice, outgoing, and personable. Of course the big debate is DJ or Band. That's always one of the hard decisions a newlywed couple must make. The biggest advantage a wedding DJ has over a band is cost. There are some lousy bands out there and many awesome bands too, but many bands can cost a lot of money. I saw an excellent band at a function that charged $4000 for the 8 member group.

Band Or DJ? That is the question!
Here on BridalTips.com we focus on DJs. Don't hire a band you can't see or hear first either at a function from someone you know perhaps, that you just happen to attend, or view for a few minutes on a video. People tend to get married within a year of their friends, and may see their future wedding vendors at work on other weddings. Remember, the bands need to take breaks, so they play only a few 15-20 minute sets. But this article is about DJ's. We chose a wedding disc jockey due to cost, and we did not have to worry about a marginal singer crooning our favorite songs out of tune, which we see a lot of here in Florida. Just because one person is a good singer in a good band, does not mean the rest of the world is. Anyone who plays in a band has seen their share of awful bands. And when a consumer advocate like me tries to point out both sides of the coin to consumers, the losers come out of woodwork to complain how useless I am. Those are the people you need to avoid. But I suspect that you'll have the least amount of problems with your DJ than any other vendor, because the vast majority of DJs are great. I've been to maybe 12 weddings in my life and 3 of those 12 weddings (25%) I thought the wedding disc jockey stunk. Many other guests at these weddings back me up about wedding DJs.

A good wedding DJ is cheaper than bands, and they dynamically work your wedding crowd for 4 hours. In rare cases a band might party hardy then decide they don't want to show up. This probably happens more than a DJ not showing up. This is why you should use contracts. If they refuse to use one, then you should refuse to use their services. Bands always arrived late at my friend's recording studio. And before any musicians get all indignant, it happened at my sister's wedding. She hired a highly recommended harpist who was out getting drunk when she should have been at the wedding. Luckily I had brought a wedding CD as backup, the catering manager brought out a CD player, and we had music for me to walk her up the aisle with. So it does happen.
Feedback Alert! What Causes that loud shrieking feedback?
One problem that plagues MANY weddings with bands and DJ's is feedback. Let's call it Jeff's Law of Wedding Acoustics:

Keep the microphone away from the speakers!

Sounds easy on paper, but man, what a difficult concept for some DJs to grasp! Some bands can't grasp this simple concept and often the result is ear piercing feedback. They look around startled like they never heard feedback before, and the singer is standing with the microphone only one foot away from the speaker wondering what the cause is. We were at a wedding and the band produced feedback half a dozen times. Good wedding DJs and bands never produce feedback. “Starving artist” musicians usually cannot afford decent PA systems which result in the lead singer not being heard properly feedback. Wedding guests hate this.

Interviewing Prospective Wedding DJs
Get Wedding DJ References From Friends, Coworkers, Wedding Reception Halls
Your best resource in finding your wedding DJ is people you know. Ask around, try locally famous DJs from radio stations. Some people moonlight as wedding disc jockeys and are good at it. Talk to recent newlyweds, ask your wedding reception hotel or resort, they may have a list of preferred vendors for you to call, wedding DJs whom they trust. They also see the horror stories and know who to avoid. This list contains vendors that the resort has worked with and knows to be reliable and professional. The resort's reputation is stake also. But beware of secondary hotels or reception sites that might not be as scrupulous. Some caterers may get a kickback, so know who you are dealing with. Our DJ was recommended to us by the catering manager at the Boca Raton Resort where we had our reception. Our DJ also worked her wedding, and she oversees many weddings every year so she knew who the right DJ was, and boy was she right!

Interview 3-5 Wedding Disc Jockeys
Don't rush to pick your wedding DJ, they all have different personalities. Ask to see videos from previous weddings so you can view a few minutes of their work. Remember that using computer software, a DJ can edit their best material to make themselves look much better than they are. But at least you cans see them in action. Give more weight to personal recommendations. Scrutinize wedding videos from friends to see if you like their DJ. If you happen to see your potential DJ while you are a guest at another wedding before you make your decision, that helps too. Many people of marrying age attend several weddings in a year, and this is a good time to start scoping your vendors. If you have special song requests, ask the DJ if they have it or if they can get it. If your reception is complex, and in a big well known resort or hotel you want a true professional who works in the big places, not someone who travels the condo clubhouse circuit. Many DJ's may get offended by this, but you really want someone with the experience of working with the catering departments of these larger venues. This synergy between DJ and catering manager is what keeps your function running smoothly. A DJ's talent should reach far beyond just motivating the crowd or making the announcements at the right time. They must have their finger on the pulse of your wedding and know everything that is going on. The only way this can happen is when they have a good working relationship with the venue staff.

Questions To Ask Your Prospective Wedding DJ

Is the DJ familiar with your wedding venue?
Ask your DJ if they have done weddings at your reception site before. It helps that they know the wedding venue, how to get there, and they have a familiarity with the staff. Your wedding disc jockey may also be better prepared to deal with known issues or caveats with the wedding reception hall. Every little positive wedding DJ bullet item you find makes it less likely that you will have problems with your DJ. It does not mean you should reject the DJ if they have not been there before, but it's a nod in their favor.

Who will be your actual DJ spinning discs at your wedding?
This one is important. You would hate to spend an hour interviewing your wedding DJ and like their personality, only to be blindsided at your wedding by having another DJ show up, when you expected the DJ that you interviewed. Make absolutely certain your contract spells out exactly who will be your DJ. If you want the owner and not their employee it should be on the contract. The contract should also mention what time and place they are supposed to be. Call a month ahead of the wedding to verify. Nay verbal promises made by your wedding DJ should be in writing on the contract. They won't remember several months from now what they verbally promised you today.

What about wedding DJ overtime, and other unexpected or hidden fees?
Your contract should clearly specify all costs including any assistant disc jockeys they will have with them, as well as special equipment lighting packages, or other fees that they pass on to you the client. Be wary of vendors who give you low ball quotes, but only give you 3 hours of time. If your reception runs longer, you find out "it's another $200 per hour or we walk out right now". You must also plan for overtime in case the reception runs longer than the contract specifies. The contract should clearly spell out how much extra it will cost you to have your wedding DJ for an extra hour or 2. It can cost $150 or more. Do not believe verbal promises stating they will work extra hours or have assistants for free. Put it in writing in the contract, or they will not do it. Don't be blindsided like many brides and grooms are when there event runs over. I receive complaints from brides whose wedding ran over, and the DJ threatened to leave if not paid in cash right now. You don't want surprises, your wedding DJ contract should be a game plan that covers all bases so you know exactly how much your DJ will cost you.

What attire will your wedding disc jockey wear at your wedding?
Sounds like a no brainer, but you usually want your DJ to wear a tuxedo. The DJ at my brother's wedding was wearing black jeans and a shirt that was hanging out. He was supposed to be wearing a tuxedo. Even the photographer went up to him and chastised him.

How many years experience does this wedding DJ have? Will they play CD's you provide?
Some wedding disc jockey folks have a list of songs they play and except for the bride and groom first dance, do not give you much choice. Our wedding DJ to allowed us to choose at least 50% which is not the norm. Let your DJ be your guide as to what songs should be played. A good disc jockey reads the crowd and knows what to play. Be sure they know what NOT to play, as well as special songs you want to hear. Ask if they will accept requests from wedding guests. Your wedding disc jockey should be flexible with a wide selection, so requests from your wedding guests can be fulfilled. This step is VERY crucial, because your wedding DJ plays about 60 songs during your reception, and you want nothing but the best tunes to keep your dance floor crowded. If the DJ needs to intervene and suggest a song, heed them as they generally know what they are doing and keep up with the current trends. You want a wedding DJ who can adapt to any crowd. This DJ will be someone who is very well versed in all areas music. Don't try to give the DJ a tape or a list of 100% of the songs to play for the night. You hired a DJ not a juke box operator. If they stick to your play list, I can guarantee you'll have an empty dance floor. Your musical taste is not the same as 120 people at your wedding. Let your DJ do their job and keep your wedding guests happy.

Where will your wedding DJ setup? Is there a dance floor?
This is a rare need, but some wedding reception sites require your wedding DJ to bring a dance floor if the room does not have one. Some hotel banquet halls are all carpeted, without a hard floor for dancing. Also, you MAY not want a DJ who comes in and elevates themselves on the stage. We liked our wedding DJ's philosophy that the DJ should NEVER overshadow the bride and groom and he did NOT want to be up on the stage. Rather, he setup off the right closer to the crowd. Bucking tradition at the Boca Resort, we put our bridal party head table up on the stage. This allowed more space in the room for the guests, and ALL of them could see us.

Will your wedding disc jockey need to be fed at your wedding?
Be sure to feed your DJ, with travel, setup, performance, tear-down and return travel, they often go 10 or 12 hours without eating Ask if they want to be fed. Some disc jockeys want food, some do not want to eat while they work. They deserve it though, because they might be there 4 hours with nothing to eat or drink. The caterer needs to know so they can bill you accordingly. They usually make sandwiches for the DJ's, musicians, photographers, etc., or you can just let them eat off your buffet. Verify pricing with the caterer, you would not want them to charge you $150 per head for a DJ and an assistant disc jockey. The DJ at our wedding refused to be served food, don't know why. He felt we spent enough money and should not have to spend more to feed the DJ, so he eats before the wedding. He also felt it was unprofessional for the DJ to be eating when they should be working. We really admired his philosophy on this topic, but it's still ok to feed them, they'll be there 4 hours or more plus setup time. The hotel would have charged $18 for his food. We could not even get him to take a Coke. It's always nice to feed your vendors. We even gave him some chocolate and a centerpiece to take home to his wife after the reception.

Does your wedding DJ have a request form for you to fill out?
Ask for a list of wedding requests and suggestions in all categories. Some wedding DJs have a request form for you to fill out, so they can have everything ready for the wedding. Some obscure songs can take a while for them to obtain.

Does your wedding DJ do corporate functions also?
Ask the DJ if they ever do corporate functions, and view sample videos. If you can find a talented wedding DJ who has experience in corporate functions, then you really have someone worth their weight in gold. These are true professionals with mastery of dealing with large scale projects and all the SNAFUs that go along with them. The DJ we chose does numerous corporate functions in addition to being an excellent wedding DJ, and companies have paid to fly him all over the place. If you are a wedding DJ, this is a good selling point. Not a deal maker, but impressive, and it's ok to use a DJ that does not do corporate work.

What problems has the DJ encountered at weddings and how did they solve them?
You want a wedding DJ who is resilient, able to respond quickly to unforeseen mishaps that can mar your wedding. You can bet that many weddings look smooth, but had issues that were quickly seamlessly patched behind the scenes by DJs, caterers, and other vendors.

Are you insured or belong to any professional organizations like A.D.J.A?
Your contract only states what your DJ will do, but it does not say if they will do it well. Membership in organizations like A.D.J.A. gives them growth, education, and ethics.

How Much Do Wedding DJs cost?
The best thing about wedding DJs is you can find a DJ to fit your budget, from casual guys who moonlight on parties, all the way up to professional wedding and corporate types. There are moonlighting DJ's that might only charge $300. You'll find DJ's charge $400 up to $1900 depending on the area. Your area may be less or more. In San Diego for example, you might expect to pay in the $1300 for a true professional top notch wedding DJ, and no fancy lighting. In 1996 in Boca Raton, FL, our DJ's employees charged $500. But we chose the owner, who was $750 and the price might be higher by now. Our DJ charged a bit more than most local DJ's, as he is very much in demand and highly recommended by several of our vendors. That's a great way to find vendors also. When several different wedding vendors point to the same person as the best, they are usually right. Our wedding DJ more than proved he was worth his weight in gold, as the evening went flawless, not one incidence of feedback, and the wireless headphone mic never gave out on him. Friends of mine several years ago had a local famous radio station DJ do their wedding too, that was pretty cool.

Let the DJ ask you questions too like what you do or don't want to hear. You want someone who takes an interest in what YOU want. We also met with the DJ one last time a few days before the wedding where he phonetically pronounced each person's name he was going to introduce at the wedding. This is a great added touch because no one likes to have their name mispronounced at a wedding. You may want to hire the owner of the DJ company, like we did, even though they usually charge more than the employees. The owner usually is the smartest one and has the most experience.

Stupid DJ Tricks

You may want to prevent some of these things from happening at your reception, a lot of them are preference.

No Business Cards On Display!
Note: We get a lot of angry emails here on BridalTips.com from wedding disc jockeys about this who arrogantly tell us "how very wrong you are!). They forget the basic rule of business that the customer is right. If the customer does not want you to put cards out, then honor their request and don't do it. Keep them in your pocket. If the customer does not mind, then you can put the cards out. We were at a wedding where the DJ had several different vendors' business cards sprawled out on top a speaker, and it made the place look like a flea market. If anyone wants the DJ's card, they can ask for one. All DJs carry cards in their pocket. Your reception is not a community bulletin board. All DJs take note: In our opinion, this is one of the tackiest things DJs do. Many guests at weddings we attended agree. This was the first thing we demanded but of course our DJ did not condone this activity either. I've had a few DJ's who chastise me for this view, and they claim this is acceptable, as people don't want to interrupt a DJ for their card. This will always be a controversial issue, but let me just point out that our DJ does not believe in putting business cards out. It all depends on your comfort factor. Everyone I asked about this disagrees with the DJs who send us the letters telling us how wrong we are on this subject, and some of them are down right rude and arrogant about it. OK so we are wrong and all our friends are wrong, and all our co workers are wrong, and we are the customers who don't really know what we want, and we are all just wrong? Give me a break.

No Revolving Police Lights!
See this light off to the left? You don't want it at your wedding. Or maybe you do, if you want that police raid look at your wedding, it's your decision. This is just OUR opinion, but this is on the Tacky Top Ten, a cheap way for the DJ to give off a lot of light on a budget.

Not Enough Good Music Selection!
We attended a wedding where my own 430 CDs were more than the DJ's! I know, he may only play 60 songs the whole night, so how many CD's does he need? Apparently he did not have the standard songs that guests were requesting, nor could he read the crowd to play the songs that would keep them dancing. At one wedding the DJ really played some old dried out useless songs, and did not have half the songs people requested. The quality is more important than the quantity. Most DJ's use many compilation CD's and order through a record pool buying service These compilations are great cost effective ways for DJ's to buy all the hits. Why spend $12.00 on a CD with 1 or 2 hits when you can spend $12.00 on a CD with 20 hits?

The problem with the DJ at my friend's wedding was he had about 100 regular CD's, so I would have to fish through 10 of them to find 2 decent hits that I thought the crowd might enjoy. This DJ and his setup were not even facing the dance floor!! Could anyone be more stupid! He spent most of the time with his back to the dance floor (his equipment was facing the back wall) flipping through his small collection of CDs for the next song when he should have been reading the crowd. He even played several songs more than once! Then he complained to me that no one was out there dancing. Gee, I think we're going to have to book time on the Pentagon's Cray III computer to figure this one out. Obviously the DJ did not determine ahead of time what musical preferences would be, nor did he read the crowd properly. So no wonder the dance floor was empty.

A BAD WEDDING DJ CAN RUIN THE BEST OF WEDDINGS!
The same aforementioned DJ asked me to pick a few songs from his collection to get the crowd going, which I did. He lacked 2 songs that several guests asked to hear, which every DJ should have. Also, he did such a poor job wiring his Karaoke monitor, that he had to fiddle with it a many times during the reception, and finally gave up. No more Karaoke. He hardly ever got on the mic to motivate anyone to dance either. It seemed like he was there to just queue up CD's and nothing else. Heck I'd have done that for free and saved my friend the money and aggravation. The bride was upset after the wedding about this. No wonder the DJ complained to me there was no one on the dance floor. We had to choose a couple of tunes for him which DID fill the dance floor. If the DJ is not constantly motivating the crowd, the floor will be empty, and your reception will be a bust. It's like a strange quiet party. You need constant motivation from an experienced crowd pleaser. This same DJ did not even help us during the Macarena (it was THE dance back then, what can I say). At our wedding, the DJ and assistant both showed us the moves so we did not all crash into each other and abandon the floor like my friend's wedding. After the wedding the bride expressed her anguish, shaking her head, saying this guy came highly recommended. Keep in mind this is the exception, not the norm. If you are a worshipper of the Lord, you may ask that none of the songs have any offensive lyrics. You'd hate to be there with your pastor and congregation members when the Divinyls song "I Touch Myself" comes on.

The DJ at my brother's wedding really screwed things up. He was so highly recommended by everyone and my brother was at a loss for words trying to figure out how everything went south on him. The DJ did not play the songs he was supposed to play. He missed the song for the Bride & Dad dance! What a big mistake. During the Groom & Mom dance, the groom and mom were kept waiting alone on the empty dance floor for 5 minutes because the wedding disc jockey could not get his player to work. Let's see I think you just push the one that says "play"....

You can see I am not just giving you anecdotal evidence, we have been to several weddings where the DJ was the main factor in whether the reception was boom or bust.

Most DJ's are excellent, but you can see the importance of a little due diligence ahead of time. Try to see them at a function first or on video.

DJ's Should Know The Itinerary at your wedding reception!
It is the DJ's responsibility to know when all the events are supposed to occur during reception, like cake cutting, bouquet tosses, birthday surprises, etc. The DJ we mentioned in the preceding paragraph did not know when anything was being done. Around cake cutting time, I asked him when it was going to occur and he had no clue. The DJ's job is to work with catering, and know when meals are being served and when the milestone events are to take place. NOBODY in the whole wedding knew when anything was happening so it was somewhat confusing. The DJ and the caterer should have this under control before your reception begins! The DJ, caterer, and Photographer should all be in contact and playing off the same sheet of music.

Cordless Mics Are a Plus!
I'm sure some DJ's will gripe at me for this, but the microphone chord is a safety hazard, and it is restricting, although some venues you cannot get out of using cords, due to interference issues. A wireless microphone system, if properly setup and sound checked, and stocked with a redundant backup with batteries, should work out just fine. Sure there's headaches associated with wireless systems, such as interference on the same frequency, and some reception halls, cordless just won't work no matter how hard they try. But testing and redundancy is the key. We had no problems at all during our 4 hour reception, and our DJ used only a wireless headset the whole evening. This is not a requirement, just a preference. Many fine DJ's are still using corded microphones. Remember, some areas you just cannot use wireless microphone due to local interference. Avoid wireless lapel microphones. For outdoor weddings they are useless, suffering from poor performance and wind noise.

What about Chicken Dance, or Hokey Pokey?
Some people love it, some people hate it. The consensus among our friends and numerous coworkers is that we made the right choice in NOT allowing it in our wedding. I believe these songs are outlawed in fifteen states now, anyway. Just kidding. Most guests feel Uncomfortable doing these cheesy dances. I even felt uncomfortable doing the Macarena. But it's your wedding, and you might want to hear them, that's fine too. But the point is let the wedding disc jockey know your preference. If you hate these songs, you would hate to be surprised by your DJ playing them at the reception. Group effort songs (i.e. the old "Electric Slide" always fills the floor. The Macarena and the Electric Slide became popular in their day because people who can't dance will usually get up and dance to a group activity song. A good conga line will always fill the floor. Each group of people is different. I polled several friends, coworkers, and wedding guests of other weddings we attended, and it was unanimous: No Chicken Dance, it belongs at Oktoberfest, not a wedding. But then many DJs email us to say that it's a favorite crowd pleaser at many weddings they do. Your group of people might have the best time in the world with it, but it's your decision.

Technical Issues to consider.
Everyone overlooks this, but it is an important factor when choosing your DJ. You are paying money for a professional and they better know their equipment. Ask them what speakers and amps they use. The better speaker brand names are Mackie, JBL and Electrovoice (with the "EV" on the speaker). Some DJs use Rane for their mixer. But this is not an exhaustive list, there are other good names as well. This is another reason why you asked the DJ if they do corporate affairs, because they may use the same high end audio equipment at your wedding. You don't want them using home stereo amplifiers and speakers because they will fail under the volume of use. We were at a wedding once and could not hear the DJ announcing the bridal party because the volume was too low and it was muffled, all base and hardly any treble. This DJ did not test the acoustics of the room with a simple sound check before they started. Can you say.... Equalizer? This is why they must have good equipment, and know how to set it up.

A DJ with a wireless headset is a plus. With the headset mic, the element is always right in front of the DJ's mouth, and the gain need not be set as high as a handheld microphone. Thus the headset is less likely to cause feedback, and if they place the antenna properly, there won't be any noise or interference. Also the DJ can easily roam around hands free, or even blend in with the crowd during group effort dances. If a DJ tells you wireless mics don't work, or give excuses why they don't work, it's because they either used cheap equipment, did not want to spend the money, or simply did not know how to properly setup tricky setup wireless mics. They can be difficult to setup. I've been to dozens of concerts with wireless mics and never saw a problem. Used properly, these units are great tools of the trade. On the other hand, I've seen DJs walk around swinging the mic, not noticing they are about to step into the Twilight Zone in front of the speaker and violate Jeff's Law of Wedding Acoustics mentioned earlier. Then, a loud shrill of feedback fills the room.

Lighting is another thing to consider. Can your DJ get additional lighting? Some people want it, some could care less if they want to save money. But we wanted to put on a show they would remember. If you want state of the art lighting, some of the bigger DJ companies can master this for you very easily. Again, this is where DJs with corporate event experience really excel. They usually have the top notch lighting, not old cheesy disco balls with 2 glorified lawn lights. We did go a little overboard, spending $800 on an intelligent lighting system consisting of 4 intelligent units and 2 sound activated gobos. Man what a show that was. The ballroom was FILLED with light. Many guests told us it looked like a rock concert, with numerous beams everywhere. And this did not upset the older crowd either, which was a worry of mine. We were pleasantly surprised to see many of them out there dancing the new tunes with us. This may not be for all of you, but if you have the means, go for it. Our wedding video looks like Soul Train. I was surprised that our DJ tried to talk us out of this package, stating corporations are the typical customer. But more and more "consumer" affairs are going this way.

You Must Have A Clear, Concise, Written Contract!

The contract should clearly state WHO will be your wedding DJ. If it is the owner, you want their name on your contract, with no switches allowed. You spent time interviewing the owner and you want that DJ listed. Be wary if they try to leave the name off, there could be a bait and switch. If they are using an assistant, make them itemize that as well. Did you agree to rent any additional lighting through your DJ? Better have that on there too. Your contract should list what type of standard lighting you are getting as well. Also have them list what their overtime charge is in case you decide to run late. You don't want any surprises there. Make sure all correct dates, times, address, phone numbers, and deposits are listed.

So what was our final package? We had the owner for 4 hours at $750, plus $850 for the computerized lighting. This also included an assistant, which is a great thing for a DJ to have. I know we went overboard, but what a show. It was still cheaper than the bands we looked at. One band was $12000! We ended up keeping the DJ for an extra hour and paid another $150, which was already stated in the contract. Sure this seems steep, and yes we could have done just the bare bones package, but it was a typical wedding for professional working people like my wife and I. This is not necessarily the way to go if you are trying to save money. Remember though, you get what you pay for. We got more than what we paid for. How many weddings were you at where several guests commented it was the best DJ they've ever seen? Our wedding was like that.

There are plenty of inexpensive DJs out there who will give you a wonderful evening. Some of you may not want all the glitz and flash we had. Some of you will be happy with an informal DJ who DOES do the condo or bar circuit. We just wanted to shed the light on it and abuse our First Amendment rights by stating many of our opinions on certain subjects. We did find the DJs however, to be the easiest of all the wedding industry people to work with. And you don't have to spend $1600! Just have fun picking your wedding disc jockey.

Do You Know How Hard It Is To Be A Professional DJ?

Hard. Really Hard. Really, really hard. Really, really, really hard.

I might know a thing or two about it. I’ve been just about every kind of DJ someone can be and I’ve been an advocate and trainer for Mobile DJs – you know, like wedding DJs, Mitzvah DJs, Special Event DJs – for about 15 years now. In fact, have trained and/or mentored some of the very best DJs in the world. And after all that time, it still amazes me that the general public (and some DJs themselves) don’t have a clue about how hard it is to be a truly professional mobile DJ.

For that reason, many folks just don’t see paying much more than they would for a jukebox or some sound equipment when considering a DJ for their event. And, sadly, many DJs won’t charge more than the cost of rental equipment (national average for equipment rental is about $860). Many actually charge less than it would cost someone to rent the equipment and “DJ” their own party.

But consider this: A truly professional mobile DJ is trained and skilled in a variety of disciplines, each of which could be practiced as a career in itself.

How is thee “professional”? Let me count the ways:

Music
A DJ must know music history and genre, titles, artists, times, how the song starts and ends, where the break is (what a break is), a general knowledge of music structure and key, BPM (beats per minute)/tempo, current music and trends – all types, lyrics (to avoid harsh or R-rated lyrics), and what works for a variety of people, ages, backgrounds, and moods.

The idea is to keep an audience comprised of 10-year-olds to 70-year-olds all involved and having fun – for the whole event – from cocktails to the meal to dancing to the end.

Do you know how hard that is?

Master Of Ceremonies
Being a Master of Ceremonies requires public speaking skills – something that, statistically, ranks higher than death in people’s fears. Proper use of a microphone, posture, staging, and movement are a few physical requirements of a Master of Ceremonies. Technical aspects include proper introductions (there are five steps to a proper introduction), openings and closes, transitions, and presiding over the ceremonial aspects of the event.

The idea is to communicate effectively with charm and elegance in an entertaining and engaging way so that guests feel properly informed, apprised, directed and guided throughout the event, which will help them feel included and participating from start to finish.

Do you know how hard that is?

Planning
As they say, “Timing is everything.”

Planning involves understanding entertainment principles and logistics, including a room set up that is conducive to the activities planned – so that it not only allows for the activity, but enhances it. Putting activities in the proper order is paramount and involves telling the “story” of the event – so there is a beginning, a middle, and an end – with peaks and valleys of energy and emotion throughout.

Do you know how hard that is?

Coordination
Coordinating the event deals with setting up scenarios behind the scenes so that when the MC makes an announcement or introduction, the segment “just happens” and feels effortless and natural to the audience. Done well, the audience will never notice any of the planning and coordination. They will just be enchanted and entertained.

Do you know how hard that is?

Technical
Knowing her/his equipment, how it functions, troubleshooting, and understanding all of the technical ramifications and requirements of an event is also part of the expertise of a professional mobile DJ.

DJs understand acoustics and the strengths and weaknesses of the equipment they use, how to adjust the proper EQ or equalization for the room and amount of people it will contain. They know what to do if the sound goes out, what gauge cables to use, the electrical requirements, and use of a mixing board, computer programs, music decks, microphones, speakers, lighting, and other effects.

DJs also edit music for timing and content (take our bad lyrics), create “mash-ups” and other edited/mixed music applications.

Do you know how hard that is?

Storyteller, etc.
Though not a requirement for a professional mobile DJ, other abilities, skills, and talents are certainly displayed by many of the more desirable DJs. These professionals draw from acting, dancing, games, singing, playing an instrument, and magic, to name a few.

A trained and skilled storyteller is a qualified actor who can assemble and tell your unique story in a compelling, heartfelt, humorous, and meaningful way. S/he uses proper microphone technique, creative sensitivity, and proper pacing and emphasis to develop the story for the listeners. These skills translate well to many other skills of a well-rounded DJ/performer, as well.

Do you know how hard that is?

Bottom Line
Here’s the bottom line. Being a professional mobile DJ is much harder to do than most people give credit. Making it “look” easy and it actually “being” easy are two completely different things. Anyone skilled in their art or craft tend to make what they do look easy. What most people will never see is what happens before the performance – the practice, rehearsal, the “scraped knees” and “crashes”, the performance workshops, the show preparation, the research, etc. Lots of “etc.”

When I was working the nightclubs in Southern California, occasionally there would be one drunk fellow who would loudly disapprove of my work in some fashion or another – usually it was about a song he wanted played that I wouldn’t play because it would have cleared my dance floor, so he would proclaim that the song I was playing, “sucked!” Followed by, “YOU suck! I could play music better than you!”

Normally I’d just carry on. But one time, a particularly caustic, drunken “straw” broke this “camel’s” back. I very loudly stopped the music by dragging the needle (Yes, I played ‘records’) over the 12″ vinyl while an astonished, packed dance floor simultaneously turned toward me in protest. Calmly, I introduced “our guest DJ” who “hated the song you were dancing to” and “could play music better than” I can.

Then, I handed him the microphone, showed him the mixer, turntables, and music…then I left the DJ booth.

A few minutes later, after the “guest DJ” was ejected by the mob, I returned to an uproarious ovation of cheers and applause – and the party continued into the wee small hours.

You’ll never really know how hard it is to be a professional DJ until you are one.

Yes, 2011 is here and we've restructured how we price weddings. Hopefully we've made it easier, less confusing and have a better offering with A La Carte options that include a dance floor rental and awesome lighting solutions for events!

Not only have we expande our offering, but we wanted to show more value to clients on a tight budget by offering a 5th package for clients with lower expectations of their DJ. Our pricing starts at $495 for Saturday receptions - but our packages extend up to $2795 for those who want us to be more involved with their events.

Students need direction and guidance when in social situations. Adam's DJ Service provided just that. When dancing became an issue, Adam changed the "tone" of the music which affected the students (and some parents) in a negative way. From start to finish, Adams DJ Service was AMAZING. After my first meeting with Adam, I really felt he had an understanding of what I was looking for. He was always quick to respond to my E-mail's, easy to work with, and gave me some wonderful referrals for other vendors. As my event got closer, Adam told me who my DJ was going to be, I was nervous because it wasn't Adam himself. But I felt confident that if Adam recommended him, he would be great, which is an understatement. We LOVED Kryspin, my guests LOVED Kryspin, he was THE BEST! We gave him a brief idea of the tone we were trying to create and a few song selections. Most of the songs played were not from that list, but they were perfect. Even the catering company was wondering who picked all the tracks. People started dancing as soon as the music started, there really wasn't any slow times. Kryspin also is a great MC. I hate it when the DJ at an event makes things awkward, this never happened. He made everyone feel at ease, was easy to approach, and really seemed to enjoy what he was doing. I can't say enough about him. I would definitely recommend Kryspin to anyone. Adam's DJ Service outperformed my expectations. I had so many vendors and entertainers at my reception, I was really nervous as to how they would all work together. Our DJ did a beautiful job announcing and working with (3) other performing groups. Adam is a talented and outstanding DJ, host and organizer, who has a passion for his work. In an industry were most DJ’s create a cheesy cookie-cutter reception, Adam created an atmosphere that was unique our wedding. Most importantly when consulting with Adam he treated us like friends and not as profit. He sincerely wanted to make sure our reception was perfect, and it was thanks to Adam! The way he was able to coordinate the communication between caterers, photographers, planners and guests was extremely smooth and professional, the entire night went perfectly because of Adam. We had a diverse crowd from all over the world of varying cultures, including a very large contingent from NYC and were afraid our DJ would not be able to reach across the entire crowd. However Adam kept EVERYONE engaged and entertained without being in-your-face and annoying, and at the same time kept true to the theme we wanted for our wedding. All of our guests were so impressed with Adam that they took notes of what he did for upcoming weddings! A friend of mine said if Adam was based in NYC, he would’ve hired him on the spot for his upcoming Manhattan reception.
To top this all off Adam has professional ties throughout the Puget-sound area and was familiar with the staff and layout of our reception hall (The Canal at Ballard). I can go on and on of how impressed our guests and I were of Adam and his staff. He worked so hard and spent so much time with us to make sure things went right and did not hesitate with last minute changes. I would be more than happy to speak with anyone about Adam’s service, he went beyond what we expected from him and make our reception so perfect it was unreal.

Sean really made an effort to get to know our personalities and the social environment we would like. From there he developed the kind of music selection we would like, and what type would create the kind of party atmosphere we wanted for our reception. Although we wanted a "party" setting for the reception, he started by playing some of the kind of jazz we liked while setting up before guests arrived. This made for a nice intro while we were taking pictures and finishing up. He proceeded to keep the party going during the reception and got a lot of people dancing and having fun. He socialized with us a little towards the end....I think because HE was having fun! He also avoided stuff we would NOT like. So overall, a very good job well done!

Travis, our DJ, was really great about talking up our photo booth. Some of our older guests were a little wary of the whole idea of a photo booth at a wedding, but because Travis kept inviting people to come over and have fun with it, we got everyone to give it a try. He also was great about communicating with our caterer and photographers, so everything ran very smoothly. The music selection was great! One of our older relatives said she would love to get the playlist, as she could listen to it everyday, and one of our nieces danced until she could barley stand up anymore. Everyone had a really great time, and Travis was a huge part of that. We are so glad we choose to go with you guys. We could not have asked for a better experience.

If you are planning your wedding and have questions or concerns, these workshops are for you! Every bride has questions and sometimes no one to ask. Come listen to wedding professionals with answers. The workshops are designed to help you learn to interview potential vendors such as photographers, florists, DJs, officiants, caterers, etc. The workshops will provide you with information to make wedding planning decisions with ease, choose the best wedding dress or wedding flowers for you, and connect you with wedding professionals with DIY solutions.

Brides and Grooms from all over Western Washington where in town on Sunday, May 23 for the Snohomish Wedding Showcase Tour! Pink Blossom Events had a chance to talk to many of them as they stopped by Antheia Ballroom.

As guests arrived, they were greeted by the owners of Anthia Ballroom and were given a glass of sparkling cider to toast their engagement! Spring is nearly here! Update time...

It's been a while since our last post; I've been a lot busier than I thought I would be. So here's what I've been up to here at Adam's DJ Service!

After the open house at the Tacoma Art Museum the week of my last post, I helped out with the Bellevue Relay Kickoff for the American Cancer Society at Lincoln Square Cinemas. We will be helping provide music and sound equipment as sponsors of the Bellevue and Gig Harbor Relays this year again.

On the night of the 23rd of January, I DJ'd the Tacoma City Dance at the McGavick Center at Clover Park Tech. Great venue, great decor, great kids (for the most part!) - overall the event was a success and most attendees had a good time. Lots of meetings filled up my calendar the following week and time in the office prior to our two mini vacations with family to Birch Bay, WA and Seaside, OR! Saturday the 30th, I did participate in two open houses for venues who host weddings and other events, one at The Manor in Everett and the other at the Holiday Inn in Seatac. I then proceeded to a Sweet 16 in West Seattle that I DJ'd at; had a great time, as this was quite the surprise party! Sunday the 31st, we participated in the South Sound Wedding Show at the Great Wolf Lodge in Centralia. We met a lot of great people and potential candidates, but we haven't booked any events as a result of being there. I hope that changes soon!

Between our Birch Bay and Seaside trips, I DJ'd a surprise 60th Birthday for a family friend and of course watched the Super Bowl! The following weekend, I DJ'd a valentines dance and a Haiti fundraiser with Heather Hope at the Center House Bistro in Seattle where my good friend Tracy Garrow works! It wasn't the turnout we were hoping for, but thanks to generous donations, we were able to send nearly $700 to the charity Doctors Without Borders.

February 17th was the highlight of my month, though. I had been planning since December a surprise 30th birthday party for my wife Ellen for this night! My friends Amy and John Hatcher (owners of Cafe Pacific in Auburn) helped me work out a great deal for a party at their place and we pulled it off! The food was great and we had a nice mix of family and friends attend. Special thanks to Travis, Eric, Kami and Ryan for helping with that! The "Twilight" cake from Celebrity Cake Studio was great, too!

Lisa Dupar had a nice open house on Thursday the 18th of February and I took a high school student who I'm mentoring for his Senior Project. The food was excellent and I'm happy to have finally met Lisa herself, because I've worked events with her staff a few times and they're always a pleasure to work with!

The weekend of the 19th was a learning experience; I got to stay at The Nines in Portland for the NACE Leadership Conference. I could write an entire blog post on this weekend alone, but I'm going to keep the highlights from the public because it's just something I have to do. Let's just say it was educational, fun, tiring and something I hope I get an opportunity to do again some day. Sunday the 21st, I returned from Portland and provided DJ/Karaoke services at the Taphouse Grill in Bellevue for one of our best corporate clients, Maggiano's.

The following week, lots of meetings, open houses, and a symphony date with the wife! Occasions Catering had a tasting at Pioneer Park Pavillion in Puyallup. The Wedding Network USA teamed up with ISES (Seattle chapters) to have guest speaker Sasha Souza talk about her experiences with planning/designing weddings. What an awesome presentation held at The Ruins in Seattle! She is one of the best in the U.S. at what she does, and it was an honor to meet her and learn some things from her. She talked about what makes a trend: when someone sets out to create something different that is then imitated or replicated by others using the original idea. Some wedding trends she mentioned are economy based, based on experiences from the past, include family, and downsizing without sacrificing design (need vs. want). Quote: "I spell need W-A-N-T!" I also liked how she talked about color trends, and how the Pantone forcast for 2008 really wasn't relevant with weddings until 2010 (2 year turnaround). So for those that think Turquoise is the color of the year, I guess you'll have to wait until 2012 for that one to kick in really big! For brides with big budgets who want a beautifally designed wedding, hire Sasha's company, or at least check out her blog and read her book to get ideas! (http://sparkliatti.com/) And then yes, I finally got to have a date night with my wife Ellen. She thought that was going to happen when we had her surprise party, but we ended up going to a nice restaurant in Bellevue called Pearl, the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya and then a night in a hotel room! Thank you grandma Lynn for babysitting Loodle!

This past weekend, I helped with A/V and music at the Lincoln Day Dinner held at the Nile Golf & Country Club in Mountlake Terrace. The next night, I DJ'd for a fashion show put on by the Wedding Bell in Tacoma. The following night a wedding at The Manor in Everett. And the following night, a Snohomish Wedding Guild meeting at Craven Farm. Lots of wedding folks in Snohomish...the wedding capital of Washington State! Looking forward to the Showcase coming up Sunday May 23rd. All brides and grooms still looking for a great venue in that neck of the woods should tour the venues involved with the Showcase! Adam's DJ Service will be showcased at the Antheia Ballroom.

Another upcoming venue tour we'll be participating in is the Metro Parks Tacoma tour of the Pagoda, Titlow Beach Lodge and the South Park Community Center. This is on Sunday March 21st.

And of course, we'll be at the Tacoma Wedding Expo courtesy of BridesClub.com the weekend of March 27th and 28th. We'll be sharing booth space with 3 great vendor partners: Jason & Heather Mook from Red Letter Events, Kim Halinen with Vivid Images Photography and Anthony Giordano from Motion Of Life Video Productions.

By the way, some great news about some national PR I've received lately. I recently had an article published about me in DJ Times Magazine. Check it out by clicking here. That was the February issue. In the new March issue, I'm quoted in Stacy Zemon's column entitled "Command Performance," and it's about things we DJ's do to get people's attention at events. I also just received word that I am quoted and acknowledged in Stacy Zemon's new book, The Mobile DJ MBA! I'm excited to get my copy and read it through. Stacy Zemon is an experienced mobile DJ from the East Coast and has written a few books that have helped DJs like me get better simply from the knowledge she shares within them.

Not many events for us this month, but I did stop by two Seattle wedding shows since our last post. Bridesclub puts on a smaller show at the Expo Hall at Seattle Center. We may start doing a booth there next year. But it all depends on if we can get in to the Seattle Wedding Show or not! (We've been on the waiting list 2 years and counting now! - if only one of our competitors didn't have 4+ booths at the show!)

We also had a photo shoot for our DJs. 3 of them couldn't make it, but we did get this great picture to share! (Thank you Chris Springer!)

We've got an open house tomorrow night at the Tacoma Art Museum with our friends at Jonz Catering. I'm excited to have my friends Nash Fung, a magician and Dave from PNTA there as well. He'll be showing off some great new LED lighting they have! Kim with Vivid Images Photography and Anthony with Motion of Life Video Productions will be there, too!

Saturday, January 30th, we'll be at an open house at The Manor in Everett and another at the Holiday Inn in Seatac. We'll be taking some time off in February to celebrate my wife's birthday and we'll have some other birthday events and Valentine's Day events, and some weddings thereafter.

It seems we get busier every year during the holidays, but this year, everything seemed to come together perfectly for our clients, our family and our friends. Since our last post, we've had an array of events that I'd like to share with everyone.

We'll start with Tuesday December 22nd. Joel had to cover a wedding our DJ Travis was originally going to DJ because of a death in the family. The event took place at Salty's @ Alki and all sources point to a successful event! I had the pleasure of helping with a holiday party and going away party of sorts for my friend Tom Kelly, who worked for Lancer Catering at the Woodland Park Zoo. I brought my cousin Eric along to help out and we had a good time providing Karaoke Entertainment as you can see in the picture below.

The day after Christmas, I was honored to be a part of a wedding at the Tacoma Art Museum. My friends who own Jonz Catering provide the food there exclusively, and although I had to wait longer than the guests, I was lucky to get a bite of some great food they prepared. I was also lucky to meet Juan Perez, a piano player who played some tunes during cocktail hour and the meal.

That night, Joel DJ'd another cruise for City Lights Cruises and after the event I was told that they prefer Joel to do all future events for them! No problem!

On Sunday the 27th, I went with my wife and my Dad and saw Avatar in 3D on an IMAX screen...pretty cool! Monday the 28th, I DJ'd a wedding at Thornewood Castle and it couldn't have gone smoother. The groom even set up a laptop using Skype so his sister in England could see the ceremony!

On New Years Eve, DJ Eddie took his family down to Great Wolf Lodge and spent the day providing Karaoke for all the kids! I DJ'd a wedding at the Antheia Ballroom in Snohomish. It was my first wedding on NYE and I'd have to say that everything went well, however, the anticipation of midnight was a longer wait than some wanted. So some guests left before we rang in 2010 with a bang, but they missed out! Special thanks to Erica and Marcus for making my night special with a glass of champagne as Guy Lombardo's Auld Lang Syne played after Europe's Final Countdown led us to midnight!

This past weekend was the Tacoma Wedding Expo put on by Bridesclub.com and we managed to meet many potential clients and even booked 4 weddings at the show! Thank you to all who stopped by our booth and took some time to get to know us. Saturday night, I DJ'd a Sweet 16 Birthday for a local student and her friends at the Fife Community Center.

While at the show, my friend Nash Fung (the best magician in Western Washington!) took some video as he helped us out at our booth Sunday. He integrated it with some previous video we did for his blog. Please check it out:

So now I have a lot of followup and more wedding shows and open houses in the next few weeks. I'll stop by a few wedding shows in the next two weeks since we don't have booths at them (checking one out to see if we want to have a booth there at the Seattle Center show and the other to visit other friends as we're on the waiting list to have a booth!). Saturday, January 30th, we'll be at an open house at The Manor in Everett and another at the Holiday Inn in Seatac. We'll be taking some time off in February to celebrate my wife's birthday and we'll have some other birthday events and Valentine's Day events, and some weddings thereafter.

Only a few more events and then one of the most cherished holidays will be here. Yes, another Christmas is upon us! We've been pretty busy since our last post.
November 28th, my cousin Eric and I helped my friends Jim and Gayle O'Donnell move stuff from their old location to their new location (All About Weddings). I'd say the move was a success! Another successful City Lights cruise on board the Emerald Star that night!

December 5th was one of two busy days this month. I DJ'd at a Costco holiday party at Emerald Downs. It was a pretty large event and we provided music in two rooms successfully! DJ Travis DJ'd at Sandpoint Golf & Country Club for a corporate client. DJ Joel DJ'd a Wedding at The Attic in Sumner. And our new DJ, Ben, had a great time DJing for Contour Aerospace at the Everett Yacht Club! December 6th I met some clients who ended up booking our friends at Gen X Pro, and then I went on an industry cruise on board The Islander. Monday the 7th, my wife Ellen cooked up a festive feast for some catering friends. Her Shrimp Saviche, Mango Jicama Salad and Frito Chili Pie were all a hit...so was our white elephant gift exchange!

Tuesday December 8th, I visited the Seattle DJ Association meeting. Saw some good friends/competitors and met some new DJ's. I had a good drink at the Cafe Metropolitan called "Sex With An Alligator!"

Thursday the 10th was Santa Darrell day at Wells Fargo Plaza in Tacoma. My grandpa, who worked in that building most of his life, goes back every year as santa and takes pictures with all the employees of all the companies in that building. He gives out $1,000,000 bills (not real of course) and candy canes, and people can pick up prints of their pictures at the front desk the next morning. Here's one with my mom, my grandpa and me!

Friday December 11th was another busy day for Adam's DJ Service. I jumped through some hoops to DJ an event at Fort Lewis (American Lake Club) for the Commissary employees. I sent DJ Joel and DJ Jesse to a wedding at Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo. DJ Travis DJ'd a holiday party for Nordic Construction at Titlow Beach Lodge. And part timer DJ Sean DJ'd a Sweet 16 Birthday Party in Federal Way! The following night, DJ Jesse was at Pete's Pool in Enumclaw DJing for a charity that donates food to the Enumclaw and Maple Valley food banks. I was DJing my family Christmas party at my uncle Rodger's house in Lakeland Hills...we had fun that night...

...at least my cousin Jake and his friend did!

After a much needed recovery day Sunday the 13th, Monday the 14th I met with some fellow wedding professionals at a nice little restaurant in Belltown. Looking forward to what the Wedding Network USA will do for Adam's DJ Service! Tuesday the 15th, I DJ'd another event for New Horizons Ministries - for the homeless youth in Seattle. That event always breaks my heart, but I'm glad I can help entertain people while they get a free mead enjoy the warmth inside that facility.

Thursday the 17th, I DJ'd the corporate holiday party for Expedia.com in Bellevue - I was hired to provide our Karaoke services. What a wild bunch! Even the CEO sang "London Calling" by The Clash! DJ Travis DJ'd a holiday party for TGB Architects at the Edmonds Yacht Club. Yesterday, I got all of my Christmas shopping done and then I took my family out on a cruise, onboard the Olympic Star at Waterways Cruises in Seattle. As I mentioned on my Facebook profile, "It was a great time! Chef Udo cooked up some awesome food, including a great dessert! Captain Ron and crew at Waterways Cruises were awesome last night! Matthew Meldon was great on the guitar! The weather was great! Just an overall good time with the Tiegs family. If anyone wants to go on a nice cruise, call Corine Cooper @ www.waterwayscruises.com!"

Today, I DJ'd a local wedding, DJ Eddie a wedding at the Hansen Place in Sumner, and DJ Joel a house party in Tacoma. Tomorrow, it's another City Lights cruise, also aboard the Olympic Star, a Wedding Tuesday, that holiday, then more weddings, NYE, a wedding show in Tacoma (Bridesclub Wedding Expo), and maybe a day off soon! We'll see...

Holidays Are Approaching - Adam's DJ Service Keeping Busy!

It's been a while since our last post; it was our busiest October ever with many events to tell you about. Thanksgiving and Christmas are near as are other holidays people celebrate. We've got many charity events, company parties, corporate events, and yes...winter weddings on our plate! Adam's DJ Service continues to grow with the help of our clients, vendor partners, family and friends...so I want to thank everyone personally for helping make this happen.

Since I last wrote, I have been all over the map as far as events, site visits, and yes, I even got a vacation in there! So...here goes.

I visited a new venue that is still in the works that is amazing. It's called the Moon Mansion, run by my new friends Heidi and Paul Moon. It's in North Bend and worth a visit for anyone looking to have a wedding in a remote location with a view, yet not too far from Seattle.

That same week I spun some tunes for Eastlake H.S.'s class of 1999 at Pravda Studios in Seattle. Very fun event! The next night, I showed off my DJ skills for a fun group of wedding guests at The Lakeside in Seattle.

The next week, I attended our Seattle NACE meeting at the Lynnwood Convention Center. There was a cooking contest, and one of our own members (Mindy Milton) faced off against a young, up and coming chef and she won! A couple days later, I attended a wedding vendor function hosted by TheKnot.com at Hotel 1000 in Seattle. Not only is The Knot a great national website and resource for brides, but Hotel 1000 is one of the coolest hotels in Seattle! Friday the 16th of October, I DJ'd at a friend's wedding at the Antheia Ballroom in Snohomish. My friend Tanya Davis (formerly Tanya Stone) is also my favorite florist to recommend to brides. The name of her company is Elements In Bloom. The wedding was a great success and I'm happy I was able to provide what her and her husband Marty wanted for their event. The following day was one of the busiest of the year for me personally. After my P90X workout in the morning, my cousins Justin and Eric helped me set up a sound PA rental for Tacoma Kendo at Washington H.S. in Parkland. Then I went home for a shower and a change of clothes prior to a pre-school Trike-a-Thon for the Mountain View Co-Op here in Milton. Then I headed back to pick up the gear from the rental, then on to my favorite Italian restaurant in Bellevue to DJ a wedding at Maggiano's. Boy was I pooped after this long day!

The following week was filled with more fun events! Monday night I attended ABC at Emerald Downs in Auburn. The following night was our Tacoma NACE auction at the McGavick Center in Lakewood (at CPTC). It went off with a bang as we generated lots of funding for the scholarship we award to a lucky culinary arts student there. The next day was a 3-event day for me, 2 of which I DJ'd at! First, it was an event for my friend Eddy who owns Party Outfitters. It was a mid-day event for some students at the Griffin School in Olympia. Event #2 that day was the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce's annual Boo Bash at the Great American Casino. Event #3 was a Puget Sound Wedding Vendor meetup that took place at Suite One Hundered in Tacoma. Some great food and good company! Another long day in the books! Thursday that week I attended an open house at one of my favorite little venues in all of Seattle, Acalia. Chef Shelby Sewell always makes some great, unique food! Friday night that week I DJ'd a wedding at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge Golf Club. It's always a treat to do events there as the staff is great and the food is good! Plus, I had the pleasure of working with one of my favorite photographers that night, Loren Callahan of Alante Photography. We get silly sometimes (see pic below)!

That night, one of our DJs worked on board the Emerald Star for City Lights Cruises, too. We'll continue DJing for them as long as they're in town, I hope!

The next night, we provided sound and lighting equipment for an event a friend from Phoenix flew up to DJ @ the Spirit of WA Event Center(Jeff Jones with Direct Sounds). One of our DJs, Lars, also rented some equipment this day for en entire week's production at PLU where he attends. A couple of our DJs helped with a wedding that took place at two venues: Willows Lodge (ceremony) and Delille Cellars (reception), and I hear that event went really well. I myself donated my services to the MDA that night by helping put on the Masquerade Ball @ the Columbia Tower Club in Seattle.

I wrapped up that busy week Sunday by DJing at a Halloween event for a charity called Three Feet of Sunshine @ St. Stephen's Church in Seattle. I was able to bring my wife and daughter...and yes, we dressed up and had lots of fun!

The following week was filled with family time, networking functions, Halloween events and car trouble (thank you Les Schwab!). This week, the winners of King 5's Best of Western Washington were announced, and I'm pleased that we had enough support from our clients, vendor partners, friends and family to get 2nd place in the Wedding DJ category! On top of that, probably the most unique, memorable wedding took place on Halloween this year. Here's how it went down: Imagine a cool couple who have been together for 10 years but not officially tied the knot. They invite you to a "Halloween Party" via a pretty fancy invitation. The event is to include drinks, dinner and entertainment like a magician (my friend Nash Fung), jugglers, a contortionist and a great MC dressed up like a circus ring-leader from Pure Cirkus (Armitage Shanks). The first two hours are drinks, food and mingling. Then the costume contest with prizes for scariest, funniest and most original costumes. And then a skit only the DJ (me!), MC and the bride and groom know about - and by the way, our groom is Frankenstein and our bride is the Bride of Frankenstein! Armitage pulls up two people to the stage (best man and maid of honor) for a "special award," but needs help from a monster to decide how this will happen. But the monster is fierce and needs a mate first! Ah ha! Armitage, also a licensed officiant, leads this right into a surprise wedding ceremony in Halloween fashion! It was a party from that point on and a very fun and memorable event overall. Many great costumes, great people and simply a well planned event that the clients were very happy with. By the way, the bride and groom (John & Jen Cook) went so far out of their way with this event, they had their makeup done by Brian Sipe, an artist who helped with makeup in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Ali, Van Helsing, Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Star Trek 2009! Other vendors from this Halloween Wedding included the Pickering Barn, Prop Gallery West, Aaron Warder Photography, Countryside Floral and Remmy's Catering. I wish I had more pics from this event, but for now, check these out!

So that event capped the busiest October ever for us. The first week of November I attended the launch of the Wedding Network USA at the CTC in Seattle. I am a founding member and proud to be a part of this organization. Like NACE and ABC, I'm sure it will be a good thing to contribute to. Friday November 6th I'd like to forget. Trying to get to Olympia for a school dance at the Griffin School, all the lanes on I5 were blocked near Fort Lewis due to a jack-knifed semi truck. Trying to take a back road, I encountered a dead end due to construction. With no way over the base to I5, I proceeded the only other way I know...through Roy and Yelm. What a mistake this was, because everyone was going this way. It took me 3.5 hours to get to Olympia and I was late to an event for the first time EVER! I felt so bad, but luckily the students and the principal were satisfied with the rest of the night. With that said, Saturday November 7th, we had 3 events as a company. My event started at the Grand Holiday Ballroom in Olympia (ceremony) and ended at Indian Summer Golf Club. This was a wedding for a daughter of my friend Suzy Justin, who owns Black Tie Espresso Catering.

Then early the next morning on less than two hours of sleep, it was off to the airport with the family: A weeks vacation in California! We visited Sea World, Disneyland, California Adventure and Universal Studios. Unfortunately, upon our return, we learned that our home had been burglarized and some DJ equipment stolen. Luckily, that equipment has been recovered thanks to some great teamwork and communication. Thanks to Joel, Petey, Ben, Ellen and Amy for putting it all together. Unfortunately, the trail led to someone we know and our relationship with that person is no longer. But thankfully, no one got hurt and we're back to square one with our gear. November 14th was our last busy weekend until December 5th...a wedding at Kensington Gardens, a charity event at Annie Wright and another wedding at the Pagoda at Point Defiance. For now, Thanksgiving is near and Christmas shortly thereafter. I'll write again after our crazy December...lots of holiday parties, weddings and other fine events! It's October Already?

Wow, this year flew by...I can't believe 2010 is almost here! Since our last entry into our Blog, we've had some more successful events here at Adam's DJ Service!. The last weekend in September we had multiple events. First, we had a booth at the South Sound Wedding & Event Magazine Wedding Show in Tacoma. My friend Chad was a big help in providing samples of his decor for our booth to show off to potential clients who are looking for some unique decorations for their events (visit www.airsculpturesnw.com).

While the show was going on, I did a wedding Saturday at the Spirit of Washington Event Center in Renton.

Then with only 2 hours of sleep, it was off to Vegas for our friends' wedding: Chris and Allison, the photography team @ Chris Springer Photography.

Upon returning, a lot of catch up and a wedding this past Saturday at the Hall @ Fauntleroy. Due to sickness, I had to cancel meeting with my Uncorked wine group Sunday or seeing one of my favorite DJ's in town from Toronto, Deadmau5 at the Showbox.

Last night, our family was honored to be guests at our friends house. These friends just so happen to be caterers and owners of Cafe Pacific Catering in Auburn. John & Amy Hatcher made what's called "Clambake In A Can," actually, we got to put what we wanted into the paint cans and then the food went on the grill; a most unique concept! But it was EXCELLENT! And for dessert? The best Creme Brulee I've ever had!

And today, at our South King County Wedding Vendors Meetup, our presenter was Laura Feltin with Biznik and I'm now gung ho about another social media website!

Anyways, we've got some great events coming up I'll be sure to tell you about. Class Reunions, cruises, auctions, more weddings, etc.

Event Update - Adam is Busy!

Wow! Lot's going on in the world of Adam's DJ Service!

I wanted to share some information about where we've been, what we've done and what we're doing presently and in the near future.

Two weekends ago, the Buckles Group hosted the Tacoma Dome Wedding Expo (www.bridesclub.com) and it was our first booth in a while, and yet another learning experience!

While the show was going on Saturday, we helped DJ, MC or provide equipment for events at Shilshole Bay Beach Club in Seattle, The Attic in Sumner, Waterways Cruises in Seattle, The Pagoda @ Point Defiance in Tacoma, Cedarbrook Center in Seatac and The Alexis Hotel in Seattle! Yes, a busy day! Then Sunday, I actually attended Day 2 of the Wedding Expo in Tacoma followed by my wife's cousin's wedding at the Liberty Theater in Puyallup (not a great place to have a wedding, if you want my opionion).

Monday the 14th, I attended my NACE meeting at the Bellevue El Gaucho. Tuesday was our South Sound chapter NACE meeting at The Heritage Room in Olympia, with awesome food from Occasions Catering! Saturday the 19th, we had events at Maggiano's Little Italy, Tacoma Golf & Country Club and the Golf Club at Newcastle. Sunday the 20th was no doubt a "farm" day as we participated in events at Tazer Valley Farm in Stanwood, Lord Hill Farms in Snohomish and Genesis Farm in Enumclaw!

Monday the 21st I had an event at Clover Park Technical College. That night, I attended our ABC meeting at the Woodland Park Zoo hosted by Lancer Catering. Tuesday I dropped by the Tacoma Art Museum to check the space out as we'll be providing music at their open house this Sunday from 5:30 to 8pm, thanks to our invitation from their new in-house food provider, Jonz Catering. Today I had a ribbon cutting and grand opening for the new Whirlpool warehouse in Spanaway, which is run by Penske Logistics. I even got my picture with the Maytag Man!

I also had a meeting with some fellow NACE people to help plan our auction at the LaQuinta in Tacoma. Then I went to a wedding networking group (www.meetup.com) at Three Chicks Catering's "The Venue On Union" in Tacoma. This weekend, we'll be participating in the South Sound Wedding Show at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center. I also have a wedding at the Spirit of Washington Event Center in Renton. Sunday I get to go on a short but much deserved vacation in Las Vegas - to be there for my friends Chris and Allison (www.chrisspringer.com)as they get married 10 years to the day they met!

As you can see, I am quite busy as the owner of my business. But I take great pride in educating myself and getting to know others who are passionate about helping people have successful events. This is why I encourage my clients to use me as a resource and allow me to do more than just show up to their events and play music! And I still have time to hang with my cute daughter, Elisa!

Labor Day Weddings

I personally had 3 weddings this past weekend and I, the DJ, decided to take some pictures to share! Yes, I know I'm not the best photographer, this is why you hire someone like Hope Haven, Lumina or Totten! I discovered through this process why it's important to have a good camera, too. My Nikon Coolpix takes nice pictures, but it doesn't take the picture right when I press the button; sometimes my patience runs out when I'm pushing the button and it takes a few seconds to actually take the picture. Enough about that, here's how my weekend went.

Friday, my event was at Golden Gardens in Ballard. The "Bathhouse" as they call it, is a nice little venue but it was a little tight with the amount of people our clients invited to their reception. All in all, it worked out! After I got setup, I helped hang the decorations from the rafters and set the chairs around tables.

Holly-Kate Foss with Sweetpea Events was the planner and coordinator for this event and I must say she did a wonderful job!

Our clients, Ted and Lauren Tanabe, are such a great couple! I have a feeling that they'll be together forever!

Saturday, I DJ'd a pretty laid back event at the Heritage Hall in Kirkland. It's a nice little facility. I worked with Sherri Smith with McKenzie Kate Weddings.

Sunday, I DJ'd a wedding with an Indian groom, so there was some integration of Hindi music to the event. It was at a beautiful venue called Alderbrook in Union, WA. You might not be able to tell from the picture below, but it was pouring down rain during the ceremony so luckily, it was moved inside.

I had the pleasure of witnessing a great wedding officiant, Bob Riler.

All in all, it was a great weekend and all the events went well. I hope all our clients are happy with they way their events went and I'm sure we'll continue to do what we do. As I always say here at Adam's DJ Service, leave the music to us, we'll leave the dancin' to you!

Busy Season

We are in full effect right now with busy season. 22 events the past 3 weeks, 9 this week! We've been working with great people at great facilities and I can't stress how important it is to choose a venue that has a professional staff and gives you the personal attention you deserve (see Ray's Boathouse & the Lakeside Events Center). If the facility you book allows outside caterers, choosing a catering company that provides everything you need and not just the basics will go a long way to helping ensure you have a successful event (see Occasions Catering & Jonz Catering). Entertainment should be the next thing you consider for your event - and I encourage all to make your event unique! Just hiring a DJ is fine by us, but entertaining your guests with a magician like Nash Fung or a service like Flipped Out Productions will make your event unique and memorable. And last but not least, utilize your vendors that you hire initially as resources to help you find anything else you need for your event. There are a lot of great wedding planners, photographers, florists, officiants and event rental businesses to make your dream a reality. Signing off for now...we'll be back soon!

This is the month that begins the season that we, as wedding vendors, spend the remainder of the year preparing for. I can feel the electricity in the air!

How to Pick the Perfect Wedding DJ

A bad Wedding DJ can be hard to identify beforehand and can ruin an otherwise amazing and memorable wedding reception.

Keep yourself from being burned by a newbie or unscrupulous business owner. In this article, we will take time to consider a few factors that will indicate both the experience and professionalism that you can expect from your prospective DJ. From these indicators, we can hope to weed out potential mistakes that can turn your very special occasion into an unforgettable disaster.

The most critical things to look for are experience, commitment, and professionalism (We've got all 3!).

Using your internet access and telephone, you can begin to scout potential DJs. In each step, ask yourself the questions listed and use the answers to develop your standards in selecting an appropriate wedding DJ.

Step1

It may sound strange but Commitment is the number one factor to look for. Without it, your DJ could show up late or not at all. Commitment goes further than the day of the event as well. Does the DJ answer the phone during business hours? (Or at least return messages if busy!) Is he/she willing to work with you on song requests? (That's what our planner form and final planning meeting is for!) Does he a have clear set of driving directions to your event? (Or at least know the address, and been there before due to our policy on site visits!) How much more is he willing to do besides DJ and collect your money? (Networking with other professionals within the industry, offering knowledge like this article, providing tips and advice, and putting full-time dedication into making sure your event runs as perfectly as possible?)

Step2

Analysis of the DJ’s website is also an important task. Look for elements such as booking procedures (first page), past event articles (see our Testimonials page), performance contracts (got one on the website, and share it in person at all consultations), and photos (see our Pictures page). Where has this person or company booked events (see our Links page and our preferred vendor and reference list, which I go over with potential clients at initial consultations)? How recently (Every Week!)? These web elements give you an idea of the DJ’s experience. The DJ doesn’t have a website? It’s probably a good idea to look elsewhere (especially if you found them on craigslist...no offense to anyone who might take offense to that!). This is a huge indicator that the DJ lacks experience, commitment, and professionalism.

Step3

Professionalism plays a part before, during, and after the event. DJs who do not work under a contract lack experience that would otherwise have convinced them to do so already. Contracts should be designed to protect both parties. Don’t be afraid to have the DJ revise a contract to suit your requirements (That is...if it doesn't cover all of the bases already!). Is the contract in plain view and accessible before booking the event (provided online, both in document format and online form format as well as paper format at initial meetings!)? Are they willing to meet with you personally to negotiate your terms and requests as well (I don't expect anyone to book us without meeting me in person first!)?

Step4

Experience plays the most important role during the event ceremony. This factor is often indicated by the DJ’s past event roster and current bookings. Is this person doing one or two weddings a month or is it a full time job? (It's more than my full-time job, it's my hobby-turned-career! It's the best job I've ever had!) Working with audio and electronic equipment demands the knowledge and skills to set up, operate, and diagnose problems on the fly. Speak to potential DJs but let them do most of the talking. Ask them about their experience directly. What were their most recent events like? When was the last wedding they performed? (No problem! I'm happy to discuss this, and usually bring up many specific examples of situations I've encountered at many events, usually the most recent events!)

Step5

Knowing the answers to these questions will arm you with the knowledge to make better DJ booking decisions. Take the time to do things right and also realize that your wedding reception is not the time to realize the "get what you paid for" lesson. Good luck!

10 Tips To Ensure A Successful Wedding Reception

How do you measure a wedding's success? Most likely it's by whether you had a good time or not. Adam’s DJ Service knows that music is the number one factor that guests use to decide if they had a good time at your wedding. And I share these tips with all of our clients at our initial consultations, so here's some great information for you!

Tip #1 Use our Planner Form provided at the initial meeting or on our website to write out your entire musical timeline. Then discuss this information in detail at the final meeting with your DJ. You should also give copies of a basic timeline to your other vendors so they will be on the same page throughout your event.

Tip #2 Even slightly loud music is hard on the ears of your older guests. Make sure these people are seated as far as possible from the disc jockey's speakers. Draw up floor plans for your guests, so that everyone will be comfortable with the volume where they are located. Also, if you’re having a buffet, by having tables announced or released to get food, the event will appear to be more organized, people will avoid standing in line and the meal will go by quicker.

Tip #3 The Grand Entrance sets the tone and establishes the energy for the entire reception. Work closely with your DJ and/or your coordinator to stage a Grand Entrance that reflects your style and personality. Clarify pronunciation of names and select the perfect music.

Tip #4 One good suggestion is to do a formal welcome toast immediately after the Grand Entrance. At no other time during the reception will your guests be more attentive and focused. The Bride, Groom, Parents or Close Friend should welcome your guests, thank them for coming and let them know about the great time that is planned for the evening. It sets a great tone for the evening and makes all your guests feel they are part of your big day. Tip #5 The people in the wedding party are key players at your event and should stay in the main room, and together at all times if possible. Position the bar as close to the dance floor area as possible. Should the bar be located on another floor, or in another room, or even outside, more often than not the groom and ushers will congregate there. This leaves bridesmaids without dance partners.

Tip #6 The most important song of the evening is the First Dance. Pick a song that has meaning and when you hear it ten years from now you will still remember why the lyrics were so potent on your wedding day and will stand the test of time. For bride/father dance and groom/mother dance, choose wedding music that is from the parents' era as a tribute to them or even let them help pick the songs you dance to.

Tip #7 Keep your guests in mind: Include timeless standards and music from different eras that all guests will enjoy. Find out if there are any Birthdays or Anniversaries being celebrated on your wedding day and acknowledge them at some point during your event. Find out which songs were played at the weddings of your family and friends and play those songs at your event. This will bring them to the dance floor and help recall the emotions of their own wedding. One idea to help gather this information is to ask guests for their favorite songs on your RSVP cards when you send invitations out.

Tip #8 Include your bridal party in the music decisions. They can help come up with songs you might have forgotten and this also makes them feel included when they hear their favorites at your event.

Tip #9 Dimming the lights after dinner (along with liquid courage!) will motivate your guests to dance. Determine the desired lighting levels for dinner and dancing when you meet with your reception facility's coordinator and what time you would like them dimmed and to what level.

Tip #10 An overcrowded dance floor can be aggravating to the fair-weathered dancers. Make sure you have plenty of dance floor space. In addition, leave some space between the dance floor and tables so there is plenty of room for people watching. And make sure your vendors have enough space to operate in.
